Need Help Choosing Between A Van Or Truck For Moving?

September 7th, 2010

Moving Yourself
Van hire is a great way to save money when moving. Moving services can be costly, but renting a van can be inexpensive compared to renting a truck. In addition to making things a little easier on your wallet, you will have the peace of mind of knowing exactly who is handling and transporting your most treasured possessions; you!

Will a Van Be Big Enough?
Well the first thing to consider here is what your definition of “van” is in regard to van hire. The name “van” is also used to refer to light trucks with a rigid (attached with no capacity for angle variation as with semi-trailers) cargo containment area. These are also known as “panel trucks.”

Large Cargo Vans
Large cargo vans can represent storage capacity that is usually 10 to 11 ft. (3.05 to 3.35 m) long, between 5 and 6 ft. (1.52 and 1.83 m) wide and usually about 4 ft. 4 in. (1.32 m) high. However in a lot of cases, raised roof vans are accessible. These give the mover an extra 2 ft. (.61 m) of height. Most items of furniture will be less than 6 ft. 4 in. (1.93 m) tall. So, this is option that would work for most people interested in van hire.

Volume capacity and weight limits are important to consider in regard to how many trips you will need to make with a cargo van. If you have a large household to move and cannot find the required time to make several trips, the rental agreement includes mileage fees, or diesel which is very expensive at the time, you may want to choose a larger moving vehicle to reduce the number of trips necessary.

Small Moving Truck
Small moving trucks (sometimes referred to as “moving vans”) have a storage area that is typically 10 ft. (3.05 m) in length, and offer slightly over a foot (.30 m) more width than the large cargo van. There is definitely  a height advantage of about 2 ft. (.61 m) over the standard large cargo van, but not necessarily much over the raised roof cargo vans. These trucks typically do not maintain a higher weight than a large cargo van and only offer a slight increase in volume.

Still, when choosing van hire for your moving needs, they may be a better choice when you want to transport huge mattresses and stack items higher. If you want a more dramatic increase in capacity and cargo space over the large cargo van, you will want to go with either a 16 ft. (4.88 m) or a 24ft. (7.32 m) moving truck (van). These are capable of moving 3 – 4 and 5 – 8 rooms in one trip respectively.

Couldn’t I Just Use My Pick-Up Truck?
Well, you could, but I don’t believe that most auto insurance policies cover damage to other vehicles resulting from flying sofas, armchairs, or coffee tables that are not effectively enclosed. Worse yet, you could really hurt someone. I think we’ve all been unfortunate enough to have been delayed by the overloaded pick-up truck going 25 mph. (40.23 km per hour) in a 65 mph (104.61 km per hour) zone. Not only does it make us late, but we must travel in fear of becoming a victim of loose, airborne debris. You do not want to be that person. Van hire is a much safer and practical way to get it done!

In Dublin Ireland, you have a huge choice of van rental dublin companies looking out to hire out their vehicles. National Truck Rental offers affordable prices  for a variety of van sizes to accommodate the needs of anyone looking for cheap van rental prices in Dublin.
